About Reedville, Virginia Elijah W. Reed, a New England ship captain, established the town in 1874 after building a factory here to process menhaden, a small bony fish rich in oil. Reedville soon became the center of the industry and homeport to the Atlantic menhaden fleet. By the early 20th century the town, which resembled a New England fishing village, reputedly had one of the highest per capita incomes in the country. Its historic district contains early fishermen's houses and Victorian mansions (Virginia Historic Marker). We suggest you take a walking tour of historic Reedville and enjoy its serenity and friendly residents.
Attractions in ReedvilleReedville Fishermen's Museum -- Visit the Museum that features the Northern Neck's menhaden fishing industry and watermen's heritage. Open 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily from May - October. Open weekends from March-April and Friday - Monday from November to mid-December. Call 804-453-6529. Cruises -- Enjoy one of the two Chesapeake Bay cruises that leave from Reedville to the quaint and remote Tangier and Smith Island. Both cruises are narrated. They leave the Reedville area at 10 a.m. and return around 4 p.m.
Birding -- View the Gables resident crane or blue heron. Enjoy the ospreys on their nest near the Gables private dock. A variety of other birds may be seen flying around the large pecan trees on the Gables grounds. Historic Attractions -- See the Historic Christ Church built in 1735. Tour the birthplace of Robert E. Lee at the Stratford Hall Plantation. Visit George Washington's Birthplace National Monument near Stratford Hall. View Civil War and medical artifacts at the Northumberland County Historical Society and Museum. All the attractions are a short drive from The Gables. Boat Rides -- Take a leisurely boat ride on Cockrell's Creek from the marina next door to The Gables. The Gables is convenient to antique malls, to many fine golfing courses, art galleries, and to hiking and biking trails, picnic sites, to canoeing and other water activities. Dock -- Guests are invited to use the Gables private dock for their boating pleasure. Five slips are available. The MLT is 5 1/2 feet. Charter boat captains will pick up guests at the Gables with prior arrangements. |
